Health and Safety Code |
| It is responsibility of all members to ensure the safety of themselves and of others above all else. |
This safety code aims to provide information on general procedures and precautions to be followed so that, given a common sense approach, activities in MKARS can be carried out safely. It has relevance to every area of MKARS and should be familiar to all legitimately on MKARS premises. The information is not exhaustive and will, if necessary be supplemented by further guidance. |
| Emergency Arrangements |
| Everyone has a duty to prevent accidents: careful planning of all activities is vitally important. |
It is essential to make plans in advance for the proper handling of an emergency situation. Everyone should be familiar with any special emergency instructions relevant to the area(s) in which they visit / work. LEARN THE PROCEDURE BEFORE THE EMERGENCY ARISES: OTHERWISE IT MAY BE TOO LATE! |
There are no land line phones available to MKARS members at BP so the preferred system for summoning help is by dialing 999 from a mobile phone. |
| If the Ambulance, Fire or Police services are required, telephone 999 advise control staff location "Bletchley Park", where possible meet the emergency service at park gate and direct to location of accident OR get a message to the gate and advise location of accident, BP staff will then direct emergency service to your reported accident location. |

| Dealing with Accidents, Injuries and Serious Medical Emergencies |
| Ensure that the situation is safe to approach. If unsafe, and it is impossible to make it safe with no risk to yourself, call for immediate professional aid by dialing 999. |
| Never move casualties unless not to do so would endanger life. If necessary isolate electricity, gas and water supplies in the area. Make sure a qualified first aider gives first aid as soon as possible. Get help. Call a qualified First Aider to the situation as soon as possible. For serious injuries or medical emergencies also send for an ambulance by dialing 999. In the event of illness or injury where medical attention is required, the injured person should be dispatched to the Milton Keynes Hospital Accident and Emergency Department either by ambulance (in the case of a serious or urgent condition) or by car/taxi if the condition is less urgent. For minor injuries, first aid will probably be all that is required. A list of club members who are qualified first aiders is displayed in the clubroom. |
| General Conduct |
Under no circumstances are members to gain access to any roof areas; they are not to be climbed on unless a risk assessment (including agreed ladder safety and that minimum number of workers assigned) has been agreed by the MKARS committee PLUS further specific permission gained from Bletchley Park management. Everyone must satisfy himself or herself that they are aware of potential hazards involved in any task which they are about to undertake and appropriate safety precautions are in place. Unfamiliar areas may contain unexpected hazards (the shack or construction areas in the clubroom for example relating to RF burns and electric shock etc), members each have safety responsibilities to themselves and others and it is particularly important that “outsiders" receive warnings of any potential dangers. Safety signs and devices must be obeyed. Maximum loading and restricted area notices, danger and no entry signs, illuminated alerts, alarms etc are installed only after careful consideration: their message must not be ignored. Smoke detectors can be activated by things other than smoke from fire e.g. steam, dust, cigarette smoke, aerosols, soldering fumes, etc. In areas where smoke detectors are provided additional care must be taken to avoid creating Corridors and staircases must provide safe circulation and routes of escape in an emergency. Emergency escape doors must be kept clear. Fire-fighting equipment must be kept free of obstruction and readily available. Extinguishers should not be moved from their designated location unless needed for fire fighting purposes. Before goods or equipment are used, any instructions for safe operation provided by the manufacturers or suppliers should be consulted. |
Waste /rubbish must be disposed of in the bins provided. No waste must be allowed to cause a safety hazard to anyone who may have to handle it. Running, throwing and "larking about" are strictly prohibited. Smoking is prohibited within MKARS buildings. Other areas of Bletchley Park where smoking is allowed, smokers must be careful to extinguish all matches / cigarettes etc properly. |
| Reporting Health and Safety Concerns |
| Where a member has identified a matter of concern, in the first instance raise this with the committee and seek to agree a resolution. The Committee will ensure that the member is kept fully informed as to the progress of the matter of his concern. |
