MKARS News

Welcome to MKARS the Milton Keynes Amateur Radio Society.

The club has nearly 60 years of history and an enthusiastic membership with very diverse interests. The club is particularly proud of the association with Bletchley Park and our successful training, for which we have introduced hundreds of members to the hobby.

Please feel free to visit us on our club nights or at any of the events in our diary.

February and March 2018 Club Nights

Our next club night is Monday 19th February.

Tim, G6GEI is giving a talk on adding IF tap to provide a panadapter to your radio. He'll discuss the why's and how's to fit the panadapter display, and then provide a demonstration of his fitted unit.

We have an exciting programme for March focused on radio project work.

On Monday 5th March, Phil, G4FVZ is giving a talk on getting into homebrewing and kit building, describing some of his recent projects, and will tell us about making a 40m SSB transceiver for £40.

Monday 19th March sees us having our 'What's on Your Workbench' Club night. Please be ready to come along and talk for 5-10 minutes about your radio projects - technical and non technical.

Club Update - February Bring and Buy Sale

Thanks to all those that attended last night's bring and buy table top sale and club asset auction. It was great to see so many club members there, and we welcomed a number of visitors and hopefully new club members. We raised over £100 for club funds.

We'll have another club 'surplus' sale event programmed in for later in the year.

Weekly Club Net on GB3MK - Sundays 8pm

There is a weekly net on the clubs 70cm repeater GB3MK. All members and prospective members are welcome.

Cooking with Antennas - video of Wills Presentation

For those who missed it the video recording of Wills (G1YYU) club night presentation on 20th Nov is now available for viewing online.

https://youtu.be/eUKeMSsvKAY

This is a guide on making loop antennas to a budget. The measurements needed to have a go yourself are shown at the end of the video. Have some fun over the Christmas period and see what you can do, there is a competition on 15th Jan clubnight, £5 per antenna to enter, £25 prize for the winner, which should cover most or all of the cost to make one or pay for your membership if not already a member.

RSGB Contesting

Why not have a go at one of the RSGB contests?

There are regular contests on the VHF/UHF bands. You dont need high power and big antennas, there are FM and SSB contests and it's a very polite and civilised activity.  Registering your results is easy and will gain the club some points, and a good way to test your setup. Contest dates are posted in the club diary on the left. If you want some guidance come and talk to Me (Tim G6GEI) or Malcolm (M0GXZ) one club night.

Membership Cards

Following payment of membership at the AGM (or around that time) a couple of people have mentioned to me that they need a Membership card.

If this is the case, please could you send me a recent photo of yourself to membership AT Mkars.org.uk and I'll get one made up in the next few weeks.

Club Meetings

As per the agreement at the AGM, club meetings now have  a donation of £1 per person.

Could we also ask everyone to sign in please. It helps  committee with numbers and membership.
