Girl Guides Thinking Day/Weekend 18/19 Feb 2023

A team from MKARS spent the weekend with the MK Girl Guides and Brownies at Herons Lodge on the weekend of 18/19 Feb to help with their World Thinking Day. World Thinking Day is a celebration of ten million girls worldwide that has taken place on every 22 February since 1926. It remains a day for all Guides and Girl Scouts to think of each other and celebrate their sisters all around the world.

The MKARS team assembled an HF Station consisting of mast, Hexbeam antenna for 20m thru 10m, Trap dipole for 40/80m and Icom7610 radio. Instruction was given to them in small groups on radio theory, operating, phonetics etc. and each was given ‘a go’ to introduce themselves to various amateurs that we could work. It was a busy weekend, and we had some great QSOs, it was nice to find some very cooperative operators to encourage them on the air. There was a lot of interest from the girls and their leaders, and it turned out to be a very pleasant weekend, even the weather was kind which is lucky considering it was Feb.

Thanks to Brendan Owen G8IXK and his wife Janet for organising it all and preparing all the training material. John Owen 2E0JPO for assisting, Tim Cowell G6GEI for assisting and operating, Chris Farman G4CRF for helping setup and dismantle the antennas and Phil Gould G4FVZ for lending his Hexbeam for the weekend. Thanks also to the stations we worked who happily spent a long time encouraging the youngsters on-air.

The Herons Lodge venue is a great location and we will be holding our club Rally there on 27 August 2023.
